Hosting types and terms

Connecting to the internet can sometimes be complicated enough without having to worry about what terms such as bandwidth, POP3 and VPS stand for.... Read on and see that hosting haze clear!

Shared Hosting
Shared Hosting is the most common form of hosting on the world wide web.  With this form of hosting lots of different websites will share the same server.  This makes it an economical way to get your site on to the internet since the service costs are divided by each of the websites on that server which can sometimes be over 100 websites.  This of course doesn’t come without its disadvantages.  Overcrowded servers can mean a low response time or even downtime.  Having said that with properly managed shared servers this shouldn’t happen.

Dedicated Hosting
With dedicated hosting there is one website exclusive to that particular server - yours! This is a more costly form of hosting but offers a lot more flexability, e.g. software & server operating systems. Since you would be renting the whole system you website wouldn't be affected by other high traffic sites slowing down the server which can sometimes occur with shared hosting.
This form of hosting is most suited to high traffic websites, secure sites and where the webmaster requires complete control of the server.
